A Slice of Therapy: Pizza Edition

As I await the building of my caseload for my newly established private practice, I figured I could at least be of some use to somebody during this idle time.

Thus I share this slice of therapeutic wisdom — in case you find you are hungry for it.

The way I approach therapy — or how it seems to be working for me so far — is to make things incredibly…simple.

People tend to latch onto and remember what is relatable — like pizza.

For example, my analogy used during couples’ disagreements tends to sound something like this:

“So what I’m hearing is (insert name here) did x, then z, followed by y. You’d prefer if it were in which order?”

I then make it known that if one were to order a pizza and ask for black olives (x), bell peppers (z), and pepperoni (y) — the same pizza would still arrive if ordered with black olives (x), pepperoni (y), and bell peppers (z).

Catch my drift?

Sometimes we get caught up in the “order” of things — also known as the control we think we have or feel we need. Most of the time, these details wind up producing the same result.

Only then are we free to conclude that maybe we don’t want pizza after all.
